Discovering New Growth: Why Composting Ideas is Good for Business

daniellehatfield-newgrowth.jpgWe’ve all done it. . . Thrown out perfectly good ideas just because they didn’t quite make the cut for the current project or immediate goals or were completely shot down by a co-worker or client.

But have you ever considered composting ideas? Sounds strange right? Stay with me on this!

This morning while I was turning over our compost pile I spotted new growth that looked strangely like potato leaves! How this thing survived my husband’s wild whacking and digging a few days ago is beyond me. But there is was! Begging to be replanted and given a chance to grow.

So as I picked up this little mangled potato that was itching to feed my family . . . for some reason I thought about ideas and how often we toss them out when they appear to have no immediate value.

That reminded me of a little habit I have (more of an affliction) of writing down ideas on note cards. From blog posts, recipes, dress or furniture designs or business ideas, they are all filed away or in my  ‘Idea Compost Pile’ versus being tossed in the trash or worse . . . never being written down.

Regardless if any of these ideas ever see the sun – I keep them, hoping one day they will sprout a few new roots of inspiration and have the chance to grow. As with any compost pile, these ideas need to be turned so that what is on the bottom of that pile has a chance to catch your attention again.

How is composting ideas good for business you ask?

Well, when I am looking for inspiration for a new project, it’s the first place I look. Something that was previously tossed in my  ‘Idea Compost Pile’ will quite often inspire and sprout NEW ideas. . . all that was missing was my changed perspective, a photograph or a new colleague or client to bring it to life.

So before you go tossing out that great idea you just had. Hang on to it. Write it down and start your own ‘Idea Compost Pile’. . . it could really grow your business!

What ideas have you held onto that have been brought back to light?
