Recently I sat down with Lechelle Yates of local CBS affiliate WFMY News 2 to talk about Facebook Schemes. You see, Lechelle spent some time talking to folks who fell victim to some of these schemes and it made me realize that not only are the scammers getting more crafty, we the users need to be hyper aware and all the more diligent about doing our research before clicking anything.
So what do you need to know about Facebook Schemes?
- NO you cannot change the color of Facebook with that app. That app? It will potentially redirect you to a malicious phishing site that may infect your computer. Don’t EVER click on a link that sounds to good to be true. Also – anytime that you download ANYTHING to you computer it is a security risk. So be aware. It is very easy to get confused and download something that may do more harm than good. Besides, do you really want to make Facebook look like your old Myspace page? Really? Think about that for a minute.

- DON’T take that survey for the promise of free things. Think that by taking a quick survey you will get fabulous free things? Wrong. Again, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Remember that your personal information and online data is the equivalent to gold to scammers who then sell your info to the highest bidder.

- Just because your friend shared it doesn’t mean it’s safe to click. Scammers rely on your willingness to trust what your friends share. Why? Well, if an unsuspecting family member or friend shares a phishing link that looks very convincing – and you click on it . . . well, let’s just say you made their job of infecting your computer with malware that much easier. Remember that scammers like to take advantage of current news and tending topics – so stay vigilant in what you do and don’t click and share.
